One afternoon, a wealthy lawyer was riding in the back of his limousine when he saw two men eating grass by the roadside.
ある午後、金持ちの弁護士がリムジンの後ろに乗っているとき、道端で2人の男が草を食べているのを見た。
He ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.
弁護士は、運転手に命じて車を停めさせ、何事かと思って車から降りてみた。
“Why are you eating grass?” he asked one man.
弁護士「なぜ、草を食べているのかね？」
“We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied.
男①「食糧を買うお金が無いんです」
“Oh, well, you can come with me to my house,” instructed the lawyer.
弁護士「それでは、私と一緒に家に来たまえ」
“But, sir, I have a wife and two kids with me!”
男①「しかし、私には妻と2人の子供がいるのですが」
“Bring them along!” said the lawyer. He turned to the other man and said, “You come with us, too.”
弁護士「みんな連れてきていいよ。それに、君も来ていいからね」
“But, Sir, I have a wife and six kids!” he answered.
男②「しかし、私は妻と6人の子持ちなのですが」
“Bring them as well!” answered the lawyer, as he headed for his limo.
弁護士「全員連れてきなさい」
They all climbed into the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine.
そこで男たちの家族もあわせて全員がリムジンに乗り込んだが、リムジンのように大きな車でも、容易なことではなかった。
Once underway, one of the poor fellows says, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.”
男「あなたはとても親切なお方です。私たち全員を、一緒に連れて行ってくださって、ありがとうございます」
The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll love my place. The grass is almost a foot tall!”
弁護士「お役に立てて嬉しいね。きっと私の家を気に入ってくれると思うよ。私の家の草は、2フィートくらいは伸びているからね」
